How to Choose a Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Malone, MD, FACS in San Diego
Trust your face to a Specialist, because not all surgeons have the same training and certifications.
The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery provides the authoritative certification for surgeons in the specialty area of aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery of the face.
This is an advanced subspecialty board certification, one that can only be achieved by a small subset of physicians who already have been board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery or the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes The American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, The American Board of Plastic Surgery, and The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as the legitimate certifying board associations to test the qualifications of surgeons to perform plastic surgery of the face.
Surgeons who are Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Facial Plastic Surgeons have a comprehensive skill set in performing facial plastic surgery. This pathway requires an initial five year surgical residency in Head and Neck Surgery, which provides comprehensive surgical expertise for all surgeries pertaining to the face, nose, eyelids, head and neck. This residency provides additional experience with surgery of the face and neck for cancer removal and reconstruction, as well as aesthetic and cosmetic surgeries of the face, nose, eyes and neck.
After completion of surgical residency, a small group of peers is selected from all of the national graduates in Head and Neck Surgery to complete a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This fellowship is an intensive subspecialized advanced training year that is devoted entirely to mastering the most current techniques in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This fellowship is sponsored and accredited by the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.
This pathway is regarded as the most rigorous training for a surgeon to accomplish, bestowing on them the title of a Subspecialist in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Upon completion of her subspecialized Fellowship training and board certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Malone worked for several years as an assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, NY. During this time she practiced complex reconstructive surgeries for patients disfigured from cancer or trauma, as well as maintaining her vibrant private practice for aesthetic surgery patients, focusing on facial rejuvenation and rhinoplasty to make her patients look and feel their best. After years of service as an assistant professor, Dr. Malone has chosen to fully devote her time to her private aesthetic practice - a decision that was difficult to make but ultimately gratifying to contribute so meaningfully to the lives of her aesthetic patients.
