CO2 Laser Resurfacing Frequently Asked Questions

The CO2 laser skin resurfacing procedure targets the epidermis (the outer layer of your skin) while heating the lower layers in the dermis simultaneously. This, in turn, works to promote collagen production. This allows new collagen fibers to help produce new skin that is smoother in texture and firmer to the touch.

The process itself consists of a few steps. First things first, your skin will need to be prepped for the laser resurfacing procedure. This prep work consists of a series of treatments done several weeks prior to the procedure, in order to increase your skin’s tolerance to professional treatments, and helps to reduce any risk of side effects.

When you come in for the actual procedure, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment areas, helping to reduce discomfort. In the event a larger area is to be treated, a simple local anesthetic block be recommended. Then, your skin will be cleansed to remove any dirt, bacteria, or excess oils, after which the treatment will begin.

Using the selected laser, it will be moved slowly around the treatment area, which will heat the lower layers of your skin, setting the stage for your body’s natural collagen production to kick in, which will be the main source of improvement to your rejuvenated skin. Once the process is completed, the treatment areas will be wrapped in order to help protect your skin.

As this is a quick-downtime procedure, you will be able to leave immediately following the treatment. Your body’s natural healing process will take between 3-10 days. You may notice some redness on your skin, with some slight peeling. Ice packs can be used to help reduce swelling. You will likely need to adjust your daily skincare routine and will use saline (or similar solution) provided by Dr. Malone in order to cleanse the skin.

Daily moisturizers will help with the healing process, depending on what Dr. Malone advises. You will also want to apply sunscreen every morning, and reapply throughout the day, in order to help safeguard your skin – this may be necessary for up to a year following each laser skin resurfacing procedure.
