Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that can reshape the size and configuration of the ear for a more normal appearance and make the ears less prominent.
Also known as an ear shaping, it can correct deformed or protruding ears by bringing them closer to the head or reducing or correcting the size and shape of large ears.

During your consultation with Dr. Malone for an otoplasty in La Jolla, you ears will be evaluated.
Discussion will include all of the non-surgical and surgical options available to you in improving your appearance. Dr. Malone will make sure to answer all of your questions. Your customized treatment will improve the ears and ear lobes as is fit. It will be based specifically on your facial anatomy and personal preferences to address these problem areas:

A small incision is usually made in the crease behind the ear (location of the ear cartilage) to sculpt and reshape the ear. For larger ears, the incision may be placed on the front of the ear. Sutures are used to close the incisions.
These procedures utilize small incisions to conceal unattractive visible scars.
Sometimes the ears may be misshapen or protrude in a way that makes you self-conscious. Alternatively, wearing earrings over time and with the natural aging process, the earlobes become thinned out and elongated and may be marked by a stretched or torn ear piercing that makes it difficult to wear earrings. This is a very common complaint amongst our patients of all ages.

Here are some of the advantages of having an ear shaping done in San Diego:
Some of the risks involved with an ear shaping procedure can include asymmetry (between sides), bad reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, bruising, infection, scarring and swelling.
Different parts of the ears can become an aesthetic distraction at different times in our lives. Protruding or misshapen ears can have a huge impact on younger patients making them feel self- conscious in social situations. Longer earlobes are a classic finding in the normal aging process of the face and are usually addressed simultaneously with other facial rejuvenation treatments. Beginning in their teenage years, anyone in good overall physical health and stable weight can be a candidate for ear shaping. Dr. Malone will listen to your particular needs and provide information about which options best suit you for a treatment. Patients should have realistic expectations of any result. During a consultation with Dr. Malone, you will be able to find out if an ear shaping is the right choice to address your needs.
The biggest concern is to avoid bending the ears for a few weeks after your procedure. You can return to full activity in approximately two weeks after cleared by Dr. Malone. For children, they can return to school after a week but should remain very careful in their activities. Bandages may be worn over the ears for a few days. Of note, swimming and any contact sports should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Malone.
