Types of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or nose shaping surgery, is one of the most commonly requested plastic surgery procedures every year.

The nose is the central point of the face making the shape of the nose the most noticeable facial feature in most patients. Additionally, the shape of our nose is the primary facial feature that defines our facial image and profile and also refines the appearance of our other facial features. It is very distressing to patients whose nose draws unwanted attention as the focal point of their face and distracts from their beautiful facial features.

Dr. Malone is a nationally renowned rhinoplasty surgeon in San Diego who speaks at plastic surgery conferences and has published original research of her rhinoplasty techniques in peer reviewed plastic surgery journals. Dr. Malone’s expertise and clinical practice is biased towards performing scarless rhinoplasty, namely endonasal or “closed” rhinoplasty. This procedure is performed with a minimally invasive approach, leaving no cuts or incisions on the nose. Dr. Malone believes that this approach, in the hands of an expert, can garner the most natural results while minimizing healing time postoperatively.

Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty

Dr. Malone has a deep understanding of minimally invasive rhinoplasty techniques, including open rhinoplasty in which a small external incision is made on the underside of the nose. This incision heals very well and is less visible over time. For certain types of noses and nasal shaping techniques, this is the preferred approach.

Dr. Malone also utilizes the scarless or “closed” endonasal rhinoplasty technique, which leaves no scars and reduces healing time. The incisions for a closed rhinoplasty are minimally invasive and are done on the inside of the nose where the nasal bones and cartilage are sculpted to leave the desired shape. The procedure uses specialized minimally invasive telescopes to allow nasal shaping with minimal disruption. People typically heal faster with closed rhinoplasty because there is no incision on the skin.

Non-Surgical or “Liquid” Rhinoplasty

There are other treatment choices to change the shape of your nose without undergoing any surgery. Dr. Malone’s practice has different treatments for non-surgical rhinoplasty.

You may experience some discomfort after your procedure. You will likely have some bruising and swelling, especially around the eyes, that will be worse for a couple of days and may take up to two weeks to heal. Your nose will have minor swelling that will not be noticeable to other people and eventually go away over the next six months. You will probably have to wear a nasal splint for the first week. Within two to three weeks, it should be fine to return to your normal social activities with no recognizable signs that you had a nose job. You should avoid strenuous activity for three to six weeks after your procedure.
